"Who?" Zu'an and the others suddenly looked up, scanning their surroundings. Unfortunately, they saw no one within their line of sight.
The group exchanged glances, each seeing the gravity in the others' expressions. They were all considered top masters of their time, incredibly perceptive of their surroundings. Normally, not even a blade of grass or a tree within several miles could escape their notice.
Yet, this voice appeared without any warning. They couldn't pinpoint its location beforehand, nor could they after it spoke.
This implied that the speaker's cultivation was likely far superior to theirs, posing a danger if they harbored ill intentions.
"Hmm, why do you possess cultivation techniques from the White Emperor's lineage, and yet you're afflicted by the Puppet Curse?" The voice spoke again, sounding full of bewilderment.
"Who are you?" Zu'an asked, looking around warily. The voice wasn't coming from a single direction; it seemed to echo from everywhere, making it impossible for him to pinpoint its source.
He quickly activated his Jade Cong, attempting to communicate with nearby creatures to investigate, but still found nothing.
"Who am I?" The voice seemed surprised. "That's right, who am I? Who exactly am I?"
Zu'an and the women exchanged glances. The speaker seemed mentally unstable. They discreetly signaled to each other, deciding to use this opportunity to leave the eerie place as soon as possible.
Just then, the voice came again, "I remember who I am! I hate so much!"
Zu'an's expression subtly changed. Such intense hatred would have indicated a vengeful spirit in his previous life. He immediately thought about making a quick escape.
"Don't you want to undo the Puppet Curse you're afflicted with?" The voice rang out again.
Not just Zu'an, but even Yan, Yun, and Yu involuntarily stopped. The Puppet Curse concerned Zu'an's life and death. If it wasn't removed, even if he miraculously survived and left the Land of the Unknown, he would become the Demon Emperor's slave, a fate worse than death.
Zu'an also understood that Mi Li could only temporarily suppress the Puppet Curse by utilizing the chaotic rules of the Land of the Unknown. Once they returned to the normal world, her methods would be ineffective.
"There's no such thing as a free lunch in this world. What do you want in return?" Zu'an asked warily.
"No such thing as a free lunch?" The voice repeated the phrase, a hint of amusement entering its tone. "That's an interesting saying. Come to the foot of the mountain first."
Zu'an was hesitating when the voice said, "Don't worry. Since you're afflicted with the White Emperor's lineage's Puppet Curse, it proves we have a common enemy. You needn't fear I'll harm you."
Zu'an was not one to be overly cautious, so upon hearing this, he decided to investigate.
He had initially intended for the three women to stay at a distance, but Yan Xuehen spoke up first: "We'll go with you. It's better to have each other's backs if anything happens."
A warmth spread through Zu'an's heart. Seeing her usual indifferent attitude towards him, he realized she actually cared.
Noticing his intense gaze, Yan Xuehen's cheeks flushed slightly, and she immediately turned her head away from him.
Yun Jianyue and Yu Yanluo, concerned about the unknown mysterious entity, did not notice the exchange of glances between the two.
Following the voice's guidance, the group arrived at the foot of the large mountain ahead. It was then that they noticed an ancient, rustic cave entrance there.
Zu'an stopped, maintaining a certain distance from the cave entrance. "I'm here. What do you want to say?"
Who knew if it was an ancient monster trying to possess him? Ever since he was tricked by Old Man Mi at the beginning of his transmigration, he had been wary.
As if "seeing" the women beside him, the voice sighed with emotion, "Back then, I also had a few confidantes like them, alas..."
Its tone was filled with a sense of wistful melancholy.
Zu'an muttered internally, "Unexpectedly, he's also an old lecher... wait, why did I say 'also'?"
"You said you can undo his Puppet Curse?" Yun Jianyue couldn't help but ask.
The voice replied, "The Puppet Curse is a unique art of the White Emperor's lineage; it's very difficult to undo."
Yun Jianyue's phoenix eyes narrowed. "Are you playing games with us?"
After all, she was experienced. Although the entity's cultivation realm was mysterious and terrifying, if it were truly that powerful, it wouldn't have needed to call them over. It could have simply used its divine abilities to summon them.
Now, seeing the cave entrance, her suspicion was further confirmed: the entity was likely trapped for some reason, which was why it had called them. As long as they remained careful, there shouldn't be too much danger.
"I only said it's difficult, not that it's impossible to undo," the voice replied.
Zu'an asked in a deep voice, "What's this about the White Emperor you just mentioned?"
Seeing the other party being enigmatic, he didn't want to be led on, so he took the initiative.
The Puppet Curse on him was clearly cast by the Demon Emperor, so why did the voice keep mentioning the White Emperor?
"Before I explain that, first answer me: why do you possess the White Emperor lineage's 'Gluttonous Devouring Sky Art' and 'Phoenix Nirvana Scripture'?" the voice inquired.
The three women all looked at Zu'an. They had previously known bits and pieces of his cultivation methods, but this was the first time they heard about them being so complete, and furthermore, how they were linked to the White Emperor.
Zu'an was equally bewildered. "I don't even know who the White Emperor is, so how could I have his techniques?"
This person was truly mysterious, able to sense the 'Gluttonous Devouring Sky Art' and 'Phoenix Nirvana Scripture' on him. Wait, why couldn't they sense the 'Primordial Chaos Scripture'?
"Looking at your simple-minded appearance, you don't seem as cunning and treacherous as those of the White Emperor's lineage. I suppose you're not their descendant," the voice mumbled to itself.
Zu'an thought, "You're simple-minded! Your whole family is simple-minded!"
At this point, the voice slowly began, "A very long, long time ago, my ancestor, Xuanyuan, campaigned across the land, defeating various formidable figures and was universally recognized as Emperor. He was the Yellow Emperor."
The other three women assumed he was speaking of a mundane emperor and weren't particularly moved.
However, a storm raged in Zu'an's mind. Xuanyuan? The Yellow Emperor?
Could it be the one from my memories of a previous life?
"After the Yellow Emperor ascended, he passed the imperial throne to his son, Shaohao Xuanxiao, who was revered as the White Emperor," the voice continued.
"Ascended? What ascension?" Yu Yanluo remained calm, but Yun Jianyue and Yan Xuehen were both startled, sharing the same confusion as the Demon Emperor.
At their level of cultivation, they were primarily seeking the path to immortality, the so-called ascension and transcendence. Yet, for a long time, becoming an immortal had only existed in legends; no one had truly witnessed it.
"Of course, it means flying to the heavens and becoming an immortal," the voice said, sounding somewhat peculiar. "Is there anything strange about that?"
Yun Jianyue and Yan Xuehen were speechless. This entity was putting on an act.
However, judging by its tone, it didn't seem to be deliberately boasting.
The voice continued, "After the White Emperor ascended, because his own son was unworthy, he passed the throne to his nephew, my ancestor Zhuanxu, who was known to the world as the Black Emperor. This was originally a normal succession, but the White Emperor's descendants always felt that the Black Emperor had used some scheme to usurp the throne, and from then on, they deeply resented the Black Emperor's lineage."
Zu'an inwardly mused, the Black Emperor's lineage, being the beneficiaries, would naturally consider it normal. But it was also reasonable for others, seeing the throne passed to a nephew instead of a son, to suspect foul play.
"After the Black Emperor ascended, the throne was originally meant to be inherited by his son. Unfortunately, Jun from the White Emperor's lineage usurped the throne back, and he was known to the world as Di Jun."
Zu'an's heart stirred. He hadn't heard much about the White Emperor or the Black Emperor, but Di Jun was incredibly famous, especially as a formidable boss character in various fantasy and primordial era novels.
"After the White Emperor's lineage reclaimed the throne, they heavily suppressed our Black Emperor's lineage and, furthermore, extensively slandered us." A hint of hatred was present in the voice. "For instance, three of the Black Emperor's sons, after death, were maligned as plague spirits: one living by the river as a malaria ghost, one by Ruo River as a monstrous ghost, and one residing in human dwellings, frightening small children, as a child ghost. Another son, Huan Dou, was treated as a typical villain of the world, and after his death, his resentment was even called one of the Four Fiends. It's simply preposterous!"
Zu'an's expression was peculiar. He had always thought terms like 'Chimei Wangliang' (demons and monsters) referred to minor imps, but he never expected their father to be the Black Emperor Zhuanxu.
"Do you want me to help you deal with the White Emperor's lineage?" he asked in a deep voice.
"No, although the White Emperor's lineage is detestable, they are from a different faction, and their extreme methods can be understood," the voice said with utter coldness. "Comparatively, betrayal from within one's own faction is the most abominable. What I hate even more is that person from our own Black Emperor's lineage!"
